INTRODUCTION
SILAT MELAYU KERIS LOK SEMBILAN MALAYSIA AND SENAMAN TUA

SILAT MELAYU KERIS LOK SEMBILAN MALAYSIA is one of the traditional keris arts found in Silat Melayu. It is an old discipline that traces its roots back to the famous Melaka Sultanate. After the fall of Melaka Sultanate in 1511, the sultanate split three ways and a part moved south to settle in Sarawak (Kuching), then finally to Pekan in Pahang Darul Makmur. It has been this branch of the sultanate that has kept this closely guarded system throughout the centuries.
The art is now taught and headed by its founder and one who is responsible to expose this secret art to the public, Mahaguru Dr. Azlan Jumat bin Abdul Ghanie. He is also the editor and owner of the Malaysian Silat publication ‘Seni Beladiri’ which is dedicated to ensure that this ancient heritage and other forms of silat never perish from this world. Silat Melayu Keris Lok Sembilan was taught to him from his father, who originated from the Malay royal family of Merpati Jepang of Sarawak and has been passed down through his family from his great-grandfather Haji Salleh. On his mother’s side, Mahaguru is of Bugis origin, descended from the Pahang Knight of Pendekar Endut, which is one of personal Royal Guard to Sultan Ahmad Shah of Pahang and Orang Kaya Semantan Dato’ Bahaman gurus. In other word, Silat Melayu Keris Lok Sembilas was practised (and still practise) by the Royal Family and the Royal Guard and closely guarded to ensure this secret art never been revealed to the public until Silat Melayu Keris Lok Sembilan was established.
Silat Melayu Keris Lok Sembilan is one of the only Silat system remain that teaches Keris as a basic weapon of war to give understanding in both armed and unarmed combat. Keris is also a weapon of nobility. The Keris in the Malay culture can only be owned by someone who has a royal ties and close relationship with the palace. Therefore, the art of Keris can only be learn by one who has a royal ties and only to this type of people the art is passing around. Nevertheless, Mahaguru with the permission from the palace has break this ‘ancient rule’ and taught this closely guarded art of Keris to the public who has the silat experience for not less than 8 years. And not until 1999, this art can be learn to anyone regardless of their faith, colours nor nationality as to ensure this ancient war art did not merely be a part of history and oral traditions.
